Advancing Suicide Prevention Among Youth of Color: Leaving No Child Behind
Speaker: Lillian Polanco-Roman, PhD
Abstract: In the U.S., suicide has disproportionately increased among youth of color (i.e., youth identifying from a racially and/or ethnically minoritized group). This is not a new pattern, as prior research has identified this alarming trend since the 1970s. The racial disparity in the rise in youth suicide suggests that current youth suicide research and prevention strategies are not culturally responsive to the mental health needs of youth of color. Suicide risk is also most concentrated at an early age (i.e., before age 30 years) in communities of color, who are disproportionately burdened by youth suicide risk. In this talk, I will describe systemic barriers that researchers who study suicide risk in youth of color have faced. I will highlight how new approaches to studying suicide research including using wearables, big data, neuroscience, and machine learning have replicated racial disparities observed in traditional approaches to research. I will introduce the Structural Racism and Suicide Prevention Systems Framework as a lens in which to understand the undue burdens faced within the study of suicide risk in youth of color. Lastly, I will describe recommendations to advance youth suicide prevention by improving the cultural responsiveness of suicide research, training, and risk assessment.

Realizing the Promise of Single-Session Interventions (SSIs) for Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors
Speaker: Jessica Schleider, PhD
Abstract: Across >50 years of research, existing interventions for suicidal thoughts and behaviors remain ineffective and inaccessible for many young people in need of mental health support. Evidence-based single-session interventions (SSIs) are well-positioned to rapidly increase access to supports, precisely at moments of need. SSIs mitigate key treatment access-barriers: many are self-guided (offered online, requiring no therapist) or deliverable by lay health providers; completable from diverse locations; and 8-60 minutes in length, eliminating premature treatment dropout. SSIs are also effective for myriad mental health problems: To date, >70 trials suggest their capacity to reduce youth internalizing and externalizing symptoms, with sustained positive impacts up to 9 months later. However, many questions remain regarding SSIs' capacity to reduce suicidal thoughts and behaviors in young people. In this talk, I will overview (1) how my research lab, the Lab for Scalable Mental Health, has developed and evaluated a suite of free, evidence-based, online and lay provider-delivered SSIs for depression and related difficulties; (2) how we have leveraged social media, non-profit, and government partnerships to disseminate our SSIs to >35,000 young people to date; and (3) our recent work exploring how SSIs can support youth experiencing suicidality. Lastly, I will propose a research agenda for elucidating whether, how, and for whom SSIs' can reduce youth suicidality, both within and outside formal healthcare systems.

Suicide Prevention in the Digital Age: Exploring Best Practices and Challenges in Using Technology-Based Approaches.
Panelists: Dr. Kate Comtois, Dr. Ewa Czyz, Dr. Linda Dimeff
Abstract: As technology increasingly permeates our daily lives, it presents a unique opportunity to enhance suicide prevention efforts and provide accessible, personalized support to those at risk. This panel discussion features distinguished experts who have been at the forefront of developing and implementing innovative technology-based solutions for suicide prevention. Dr. Dimeff has been working on Jaspr Health, a tablet-based app that provides evidence-based care to people who are acutely suicidal and seeking psychiatric crisis services in the Emergency Department. Dr. Comtois has been conducting research on delivering Caring Contacts via text messages for the past decade and recently completed a fully online randomized controlled trial comparing mental health apps for essential workers and those unemployed due to COVID-19. She is also studying patient preferences and the ethical, legal, and social implications of digital intervention options for those at suicide risk. Dr. Czyz has been applying adaptive interventions to provide tailored support and integrating mobile technology to augment suicide-specific interventions. During the panel discussion, the speakers will address key considerations surrounding patient preferences and digital ethics while exploring the advantages and disadvantages of using technology in suicide prevention.

Scaling Up Suicide Prevention: Exploring Public Health Strategies.
Panelists: Dr. David Buys, Dr. Alex Crosby, Dr. Holly Wilcox
Abstract: Not everyone who is at risk for suicide seeks help from mental health professionals. Public health approaches to preventing suicide can help reduce suicide rates on a larger scale because of its wider reach. This panel discussion brings together experts in public health to explore different public health approaches that can be used for suicide prevention. Dr. Buys has been working on upstream, prevention-oriented approach to suicide prevention with the Mississippi State University Extension. Dr. Crosby has worked extensively on the prevention of suicidal behavior and other forms of violence in his former role at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC).Dr. Wilcox has been working on implementing policies and programs that can help reduce suicide while building partnerships with stakeholders across different disciplines in the public and private sectors to increase national reach.Through this panel discussion, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with panelists and gain a deeper understanding of how public health strategies can be utilized to effectively prevent suicide.
Rethinking Safety Planning for Effective Suicide Prevention: is it necessary, and is it sufficient?
Panelists: Ms. Lisa Lovejoy, Dr. Carolina Velez-Grau, Dr. Anthony Pisani
Abstract: Safety planning is an evidence-based intervention that has been widely adopted in suicide prevention guidelines and protocols. However, there are many shortcomings in the implementation of safety planning that limits its effectiveness. This panel discussion brings together diverse perspectives from Ms. Lovejoy, Dr. Velez-Grau, and Dr. Pisani to examine the strengths and limitations of safety planning and discuss potential areas for improvement. Ms. Lovejoy will share her lived experience, while Dr. Velez-Grau will provide insights into increasing engagement and integrating culturally appropriate strategies for safety planning. Dr. Pisani will draw from his extensive work on brief interventions for suicide prevention to highlight the challenges of balancing standardization and personalization when it comes to safety planning. This panel discussion will provide the audience with a nuanced understanding of the effectiveness and limitations of safety planning and identify ways to enhance its use as a suicide prevention strategy.
